Privacy Policy
Flique is private by default. There is no account, no advertising, and no third-party tracking. Your learning data stays on your device and in your own iCloud. We never see it. This page explains exactly what that means, in plain language.
Effective 2 August 2026
What we do and don't collect
- No account required. The app needs no sign-up, no email, nothing. Any purchase runs through your Apple ID. We still never create an account or see who you are.
- No tracking, no ads. No advertising identifier, no cross-app or cross-site tracking, and no data sold or shared with third parties.
- Anonymous usage statistics. We count which features get used, anonymously, under a random id that isn’t you. Never what you type, say, or learn. Details below.
- Your learning data is yours. Cards, review history, and progress live on your device and sync only through your own private iCloud, not to us.
- What reaches us is anonymous. Crash and performance diagnostics, anonymous feature-usage counts, and a tally of language-pack downloads. None of it is linked to your identity, and none of it contains anything you typed or said.
Your learning data: on-device and in your iCloud
Everything you create by using Flique — your cards, review logs, schedules, progress, level, and settings — is stored locally on your device. The app is fully usable offline.
iCloud sync (CloudKit)
If you're signed in to iCloud, your review data and progress sync across your own Apple devices through Apple's CloudKit in your private iCloud container. This data is controlled by you and governed by Apple's privacy policy. Flique never has access to it, and there is no Flique server holding your progress. You can turn iCloud sync off in iOS settings at any time.
Export and delete
You can export all of your learning data as JSON from within the app and import it again on another device. To delete your data, delete the app and remove its data from iCloud in iOS settings. Because there's no account and no server, that's all it takes.
Crash and performance reporting
To keep the app stable, Flique uses Sentry to collect crash reports and performance traces. It includes technical information such as device model, operating-system version, app version, the crash stack trace, and timing of in-app operations. (Anonymous usage statistics and language-pack downloads are described below.)
These diagnostics are not linked to your identity and are not used to track you. We use them solely to diagnose crashes and improve performance. Sentry processes this data on our behalf under its own privacy terms.
Anonymous usage statistics
To understand which features actually help people learn, and where they get stuck, Flique uses PostHog to count product interactions: which screens and practice modes are used, where sessions start and stop, and similar counts. These events are anonymous by design: they carry a random id generated on your device (never the advertising identifier — Flique never shows Apple’s tracking prompt because it never tracks), we build no profile of you, we ask PostHog not to use your IP address for location, and the data travels through our own domain rather than an analytics company’s.
These events are counts and categories only. They never include your learning content: no card text, no answers, no conversation messages, no email, and nothing you type or say. We use them solely to improve the app, never for advertising. PostHog processes this data on our behalf, like Sentry, under its own privacy terms.
Downloading language packs
The lessons for each language are downloaded from our content server the first time you add that language, and again when we update it. To send the right pack, the app tells the server which language it’s requesting. That’s simply how any download works.
We keep an anonymous count of these downloads — how many times each language pack is fetched — so we can see which languages are popular and plan what to build next. The count carries no account and no IP address. (Whether a download succeeded is also one of the anonymous usage statistics described above, under the same random, non-identifying id.) We can see that the French pack is popular; we cannot see that you are learning French.
The optional “Say it” mic check
Flique includes an optional, ungraded speaking check. It only runs when you tap the microphone, and it exists purely for gentle pronunciation coaching. It never affects your scheduling or progress.
Recognition is performed on-device when your device and language support it, with Apple's speech recognition as a fallback (in which case audio is processed by Apple under Apple's privacy policy). Your audio is not stored by Flique and is not sent to us. iOS asks for microphone and speech-recognition permission before the feature is ever used, and you can decline or revoke it anytime.
Talking with your partner
Your partner is powered by Anthropic’s Claude, a large language model. To reply, the messages in a conversation are sent — through Flique’s own service — to Anthropic, which processes them on our behalf under its privacy terms. On the models we use, Anthropic does not train on your messages and does not keep them once your reply has been generated (it may retain a message only briefly if its safety systems flag it, or where the law requires). We never attach your identity, and conversation text is never used to advertise to you or build a profile of you.
If you speak rather than type, your voice is turned into text by a speech-recognition service. By default that service is Apple’s speech recognition, which sends the audio to Apple for transcription; Apple processes it under Apple’s privacy policy. If you are on Plus and turn on the premium “Live Voice” option, your spoken audio is sent instead, routed through Cloudflare, to ElevenLabs to transcribe your speech. Flique doesn’t store your audio; ElevenLabs processes it under its own privacy policy, and it is not used to train third-party AI models. Either way the audio is used only to make the transcript, and that text is then handled exactly like a typed message. (This is separate from the “Say it” check above, which prefers on-device recognition.)
When your partner’s reply is spoken aloud, that voice normally comes from your own device: typed chat, the free tier, onboarding, and all review, reading and listening audio use Apple’s built-in speech synthesis, so nothing is sent anywhere to produce them. For Plus spoken conversation we may synthesize the reply with a premium neural voice instead. In that case the text of your partner’s reply (not your voice) is sent, routed through Cloudflare, to ElevenLabs, which returns the audio and processes that text under its own privacy policy. If the premium voice is unavailable or switched off, the reply is simply spoken by your device instead. iOS asks for microphone and speech-recognition permission before you can speak, and you can always type instead.
No tracking, no selling, and changes
No tracking. Flique does not track you across apps or websites. It contains no advertising SDK and no advertising identifier. Our usage analytics are anonymous, collected for our own product decisions only, and are never used to advertise to you, profile you, or follow you anywhere else. That’s the difference between counting and tracking.
No selling or sharing. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with anyone. There is no data broker relationship and no advertising network involved.
Changes to this policy. If we update this policy, we'll revise the effective date above and post the new version here. Material changes will be reflected in an app or App Store update.
